Diamond Carat

Diamond Carat

Carat is the measure of a diamond’s weight. The basic rule: one carat is divided into 100 parts, called points, and described by the number of points or by a percentage of a carat. (For example, a diamond weighing 75 points is described as a 3/4-carat diamond.) Keep a diamond carat size chart handy when trying to decide how big or small you want to go.

Weight vs. Value

Since a precious stone's value rises when its weight is increased, diamond carat size has become the most recognized of the 4 C's. Keep in mind, weight is only one factor that determines a diamond's value; it's the combination of all 4 C's that determines the value and price. All gemstone carat total weights (ct. t.w.), if mentioned, are approximate; variance may be up to .05 carat.
